Late summer tidy up at West Beckham Green

Our secondary site at West Beckham is an interesting spot which largely seems to take care of itself, asking only for short bursts of attention to keep it ‘tickity-boo’.

On the 26th September, Alan, David S (one of our newer volunteers) and Peter R made a short foray into the Green for an afternoon of tidying up before autumn. Time was spent removing bracken from around the area where the bench is sited and clearing the paths of brambles, which always seem to make growth, even when everything else is suffering from a drought.

We came across an illustration of one of the benefits of maintaining brambles in the understory with an old bird’s nest (that’s an old nest, not an old bird), probably not this year’s, tucked away in the dense cover provided by this habitat.

An afternoon of light work, in lovely weather, and in good company on one of our occasional weekend work parties.
