Tree Nursery here we go!
Although the wind decided to pay us a rather significant visit, a small team of just five of us got to work in one of our first tree nursery sessions at our new East Beckham site the morning of Saturday September 19th.
We used rakes, shovels, and even got our own hands dirty, to begin clearing the site in preparation for getting the tree nursery up and running. The main task was to pull out docks, thistles, and nettles, among other weeds, so that their presence (including their roots) doesn’t interfere with the trees that we will soon begin planting on site.
Our volunteer Simon also got to work on creating the first bed for our tree nursery, which we will begin planting into very soon.
After our short break, where we all indulged in a Penguin chocolate bar each, we continued to clear the ground in preparation for tree-planting.
Whilst there is still some more clearing to be done, the allotment is already in a much more suitable state for tree-planting. As such, our next tree nursery session will involve collecting seeds at our Sustead sites, so that we can start getting seeds into the ground.
