Habitat

Aylmerton No 2 Surveyor’s Allotment is bounded by arable fields to the north, the A148 to the south, and wooded areas to the east and west. It is comprised of mature and younger established trees planted under the Woodland Management Scheme which was administered by the Countryside Section of NNDC.

Habitat Management

The woodland was planted in the latter part of the last century, but no management work has been carried out for a number of decades.

Although the 1.54 acre site does not contain flora or fauna that is particularly scarce, it forms another link in the chain of sites managed for the benefit of wildlife and biodiversity by Felbeck Trust along the Holt-Cromer ridge, providing places for wildlife to feed, shelter and breed.

What have we achieved?

  • A programme of species monitoring has been begun

  • Installation of post and rail fencing on western perimeter

  • Litter pick to remove historical fly-tipping

  • Creation of access paths

  • Constructionof dead hedges aroung perimeter to provide shelter and nesting opportunities

  • Log piles built to create habitat for fungi, invertebrates and small mammals

What are our future plans?

  • Selective thinning and canopy reduction to allow light to penetrate and encourage woodland flora to regenerate

  • Felled trees or sawn branches to be left in situ to encourage fungi and invertebrates

  • Erect bird and bat boxes as appropriate

  • Erect relevant interpretive signage, subject to funding and any approvals

  • Continue the programme of species monitoring

  • Clearing
