Hindolveston Surveyor's Allotment
The roadside verge provides a habitat not found at other Felbeck Trust sites and as a consequence features some plant species that are not seen elsewhere, including Charlock (April-October) Redshank (June-October), Mugwort (July-September.) and Scentless Mayweed (July-September). Meanwhile, in the damp woodland which makes up most of the site, notable species include Bittersweet (May-October), Black Bryony (May-November), Black Nightshade (July-October), Clustered Dock (June-October) and Gypsywort (July-September).
Â
The damp understory is comprised of Soft Rush, Blackthorn, Bramble, Broom, Gorse, Dogrose, Elder, Hawthorn, Honeysuckle, Ivy, Redcurrant and Tutsan. Specimen trees include Beech, Goat Willow, Pedunculate Oak, Silver Birch and Sweet Chestnut.
The watery nature of the site makes it an ideal habitat for Daubenton’s bats, which like to roost near water and hunt low over ponds. Other bat species recorded include Soprano and Common Pipistrelle and Noctule, which favour small woodlands.
Bird species that frequent the woods include Great Spotted Woodpecker, Bullfinch, Chiffchaff, Song Thrush, Wren and Yellowhammer, while the ponds attract Mallards, Moorhens and Grey Wagtails. Looking up you may well spot a Buzzard or Red Kite soaring overhead, or House Martins flitting about to catch insects, while the surrounding fields are frequented by Linnets, Skylarks and Grey Partridges.
