It's official - Spurrell's Wood is now open

Visitors - from as far away as Venezuela! - at our recent Open Day

The Open Day at Sustead Common on Sunday signalled the completion of our major habitat restoration work in Spurrell's Wood and the commencement of public access. Despite the cold east wind - with the occasional heavy hail storm in the morning - the sun did come out and volunteers and visitors alike enjoyed the occasion. We did a couple of guided walks around the wood, signed-up several new Friends and received donations of £50 for refreshments - not a bad outcome considering the weather. Wildlife highlights included Chiffchaff and Blackcap - which continue with the courtship song, a couple of late Fieldfare on their way north for the Summer, and the resident Bullfinch, Yellowhammer and Song Thrush. It was a little too soon for the Early Purple Orchids to make an appearance though.

Please do call by the wood when you are next in the area, but be sure to follow the on-site instructions to avoid disturbing the wildlife. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this project in one way or another - the benefits of which are now available for all to enjoy.
