More Tree Nursery Preparation

A small party of volunteers hit East Beckham allotments to continue the work started by Gresham’s School students a couple of weeks ago. We began by shifting all of the pallets and carrying the branches cut down two weeks ago to another vacant allotment for a future bonfire – the current exceptionally dry weather meant that we didn’t feel it safe to set fire to the pile until we’ve had some rain and harvesting has taken place.

After the coffee break, we dug up brambles – which came up far more easily than normal, thanks to the dry, sandy soil - and removed Fat Hen (also known as White Goosefoot), leaving some thistles for the insects. Carol found some very healthy-looking potatoes, which she took home for her lunch. There was a fair amount of discussion about the proposed stock fence, to keep the deer out; and also about what an excellent site it is for seeing overflying birds, thanks to its raised position.
