Sustead work parties April 13th

A very cold and frosty start soon turned into a lovely sunny morning for 12 volunteers to spend three hours tidying up Sustead Common, the Surveyor’s Allotment and Spurrell’s Wood.

Six volunteers worked on each side of the road (thus keeping legal!): we restored the screen by the outdoor classroom and clipped back the crab apple tree on the Common; tidied up the ‘doughnut’ and cleared the old storage area on the Allotment, removing all the bin bags of old tree guards; cleared up fallen oak branches in the composting toilet area – including heaving to the ground a large branch still hanging over the area (left over from the big September storm) – and building brush and hazel wand hedges in two different areas in Spurrell’s Wood; and clearing some of the water channels on the allotment and in the beck by the bird hide.

A very good morning’s work. Thank you to all who came!
